PLA vs PETG: Which Filament Should You Use?

Choosing between PLA and PETG is one of the most common questions in 3D printing, and it's usually the first real material decision a new printer owner has to make. Both are beginner-friendly compared to engineering filaments like ABS or Nylon, but they behave differently enough that picking the wrong one for a functional part can mean a reprint. Here's how to actually decide, not just a spec table.

What is PLA?

PLA is easy to print, has low warping and produces clean detail. It is ideal for beginners, display models, cosplay, prototypes and indoor prints.

What is PETG?

PETG is stronger and tougher than PLA, with better heat resistance and better durability for functional parts.

The most common issue we see with PETG isn't the printing itself โ€” it's skipping the drying step. Wet PETG causes bubbling and popping mid-print, and combined with slightly-off settings, that's the real reason PETG gets a reputation for being harder to print than it actually is. Store it properly and dry it before use, and it prints easily.

That heat deflection row is the real number behind "PETG handles heat better." PLA starts deforming under load at 50โ€“55ยฐC, while PETG holds up to 68โ€“71ยฐC โ€” which is exactly why a PLA part left on a dashboard or in a hot car is a genuine risk in an Australian summer, while PETG has meaningfully more headroom.

Common Failure Modes

PLA softens when exposed to heat or direct sunlight for long periods โ€” but how much it deforms depends on how the part was printed. A model with a thin arm pointing upward will sag and lose shape far faster than a solid dome or cube of the same material. Colour matters too: darker colours like black absorb more heat than white and will soften faster in direct sun.

PETG is the better choice for that kind of outdoor exposure without needing to jump straight to ABS or ASA, especially if you're running an open-frame printer without an enclosure. Just make sure it's properly dried before printing โ€” PETG is hygroscopic (it absorbs moisture from the air), and printing it wet is where most of the stringing and surface-quality complaints actually come from.
