Standard PLA has a glass transition temperature near 60°C. Above that point parts soften, sag under load, and lose dimensional accuracy. PLA HT is formulated to push that service temperature higher, so parts survive conditions that routinely destroy standard PLA prints: a car interior in an Australian summer, a shed or garage in February, an enclosure sitting next to a motor or power supply.

What Is PLA High Temp Filament?

PLA HT is a high-temperature grade of PLA formulated for better heat resistance than standard PLA while keeping the same easy printing behaviour. It runs at normal PLA temperatures, adheres well to an unheated or lightly heated bed, and does not warp or emit the fumes associated with ABS.

The trade-off compared to true engineering plastics is that PLA HT is a step up in heat resistance rather than a replacement for high-temperature materials. PLA HT vs PLA, PETG, ABS and ASA

Choosing between materials usually comes down to how hot the part gets and how hard it is to print:

  • Standard PLA: easiest to print, softens near 60°C, best for models and non-loaded parts. See PLA filament.
  • PLA HT: prints like PLA, holds form at higher temperatures, no enclosure needed.
  • PETG: tougher and more heat tolerant than PLA, more stringing and slower to tune. See PETG filament.
  • ABS: higher heat resistance again, but warps badly without an enclosure. See ABS filament.
  • ASA: the outdoor choice, UV stable and weather resistant, also enclosure dependent. See ASA filament.

PLA HT exists to fill the gap where a part gets warm but an enclosed printer is not available or not worth the setup time.

PLA High Temp Print Settings

PLA HT prints on the same profile as standard PLA on virtually any FDM printer:

  • Nozzle temperature: 190°C to 220°C
  • Bed temperature: 40°C to 60°C
  • Enclosure: not required
  • Filament diameter: 1.75mm, tolerance ±0.02mm
  • Spool: 1kg net, 1.5kg gross, 256g empty spool weight
  • Drying: 50°C for 6 to 8 hours if the spool has been open in humid conditions

Run good part cooling for detail, and moderate speeds for the strongest layer bonding. If you plan to heat treat or anneal parts to push heat resistance further, expect some shrinkage and test on a sacrificial print first.

What Is PLA HT GF?

PLA HT GF is the same high-temperature PLA base reinforced with glass fibre. The fibre content increases stiffness, improves dimensional stability, reduces shrinkage and warping, and produces a clean matte technical finish that hides layer lines.

It suits precision components, jigs, fixtures and structural brackets where rigidity matters as much as heat resistance. What Should You Print in PLA High Temp?

PLA HT is the right choice whenever a PLA part has previously warped, sagged or failed from heat:

  • Car interior parts, phone mounts, dash accessories and boot organisers
  • Enclosures and housings that sit near motors, drivers or power supplies
  • Workshop and garage tooling in sheds without climate control
  • Brackets, mounts and fixtures under sustained load
  • Jigs and fixtures that need to stay dimensionally accurate
  • Functional prototypes that would otherwise need an enclosed printer
