3D Printer Grease - Lead Screw & Z-Axis 20g
3D Printer Grease - Lead Screw & Z-Axis 20g
This 3D printer grease is a high-temperature lubricant for the lead screws and Z-axis of your printer. Unlike a light oil, grease stays where you put it, so a vertical screw carrying the weight of the whole gantry keeps its film instead of shedding it down the thread after a few hundred hours of printing.
Why Grease and Not Oil?
They are not interchangeable, and using the wrong one is why a lot of Z-axes end up noisy again a fortnight after being lubricated. Oil is thin and penetrating, which suits smooth rods and linear rails where you want minimal drag. Grease is thick and stays put, which is exactly what a lead screw needs: the nut travels the same section of thread thousands of times, and gravity is working against anything runny. If your Z-axis clicks, binds, or leaves faint banding on tall prints, a dry lead screw is one of the first things worth checking.
Where to Use It
- Lead screws and Z-axis assemblies, the job this grease is made for
- Anti-backlash nuts, where the nut rides constantly on the same thread
- Slow-moving metal contact points that a thin oil simply runs off
How to Apply
- Home the Z-axis and switch the printer off at the wall
- Wipe the old grease and grit off the screw with a lint-free cloth. Old grease holds abrasive dust, and layering fresh grease over it does more harm than leaving it dry
- Apply a thin bead along the thread from top to bottom
- Cycle the Z-axis up and down a few times so the nut works it into the thread
- Wipe away the excess. A thin even film is the goal, not a packed thread
Once or twice a year is plenty for most machines. If your printer lives in a garage or workshop where dust settles on the screw, clean and re-grease more often rather than adding more grease.
