This is a set of 6 brass heat-set insert tips, one for each common insert size from M2 to M8, made for 936-style soldering irons (iron not included). Swap one onto your iron in place of a normal soldering tip and it turns the iron into a proper heat-set insert tool, so inserts go into your 3D prints straight and centred every time.

Why Use a Dedicated Insert Tip

Pressing an insert in with a standard pointed soldering tip works, but only just. The point sits loosely in the insert, heats it unevenly and lets it tip over as it sinks, so you end up with crooked threads and plastic smeared up into the bore. A heat-set tip has a stepped nose sized to the insert, so it locates inside the insert, holds it square and heats it evenly all the way round. The result is an insert that sits flush and straight, with clean threads ready for the bolt.

What Is in the Set

  • 6 brass tips: M2, M3, M4, M5, M6 and M8
  • One tip per insert size, so each insert sits snugly on the matching nose
  • Brass construction, which carries heat well from the iron into the insert

Please note: this set includes the tips only. A soldering iron is not included. You will need a 936-style soldering iron or station to use them.

How to Use Them

  • With the iron cold, fit the tip that matches your insert size, for example the M3 tip for M3 inserts
  • Set the iron to around the printing temperature of the part's material, then sit the insert on the tip
  • Let the insert sink in under its own weight with light pressure. Forcing it pushes molten plastic out the bottom of the hole
  • Keep the iron square to the part and stop just flush with the surface, then lift straight off and let it cool
  • Always let the iron cool fully before changing tips

Compatibility

Fits 936-style soldering irons and stations that take slip-on 900M-series tips. Check your iron's tip shaft before ordering if you are unsure, as other styles such as TS100, Pinecil and cartridge irons use different tips.
