How does dual colour silk filament work?

PLA Dual Silk has two colours running side by side down a single strand. As your printer lays it down, different faces of the model catch different colours. Depending on the angle, the two colours can also partially blend and create a third tone, which is part of the effect rather than a defect.

How do I get the best two-colour effect?

Orientation matters more than anything. We recommend printing a small test square first so you can see which faces get which colour, then rotating your model to place the colours where you want them. Dual colour filament also tends to suit smaller models, unlike rainbow filament where bigger prints show the effect better.

What settings do you use for your sample prints?

All the model photos on our listings are printed on Bambu Lab X1C, P2S and H2C printers using 3 walls at 0.16mm layer height. Print speed and nozzle temperature both affect how shiny the finished model looks, so it is worth a small test print when dialling in a new colour.

What temperature does PLA Dual Silk print at?

The same settings as regular silk PLA. Running slightly hotter and slower brings out a deeper sheen, but do not push it too far as silk filament will start to string at high temperatures.

Does dual silk work with an AMS or multi-material unit?

Yes, it runs through an AMS fine and you can combine it with other filaments in multi-colour prints. One tip: the colour split stays consistent along our spools, but if the filament twists on its way to the printer, the colour sides on your model will swap around. Keeping the strand feeding consistently gives you a clean, well-separated result.

Dual Silk gives the shiniest finish with the most distinct two-colour contrast. Tri Colour adds a third colour, but the colours blend together more, so the individual tones are less prominent.
